We're sorry - from 1 April 2024, we're temporarily unable to offer Excess Protection as an optional extra on new insurance policies, but it will be back soon.

What is excess protection insurance?

Excess protection insurance covers the cost of the excess you're required to pay in the event of making a claim on your motor insurance policy, up to the chosen cover limit. There are typically two parts to your excess:

  • Compulsory excess: The amount, set by your provider, that you must pay towards the cost of a claim. Compulsory excess is non-negotiable and based on a few factors like the type of vehicle you're insuring and your personal details.
  • Voluntary excess: The amount, set by you, that you'll pay towards the cost of a claim.

Our insurance for excess protection covers the combined total of both of these elements so that if you do need to make a claim on your motor insurance policy, you'll be reimbursed for the excess you've had to pay, up to your chosen cover limit. We provide three tiers of excess protection for different excess and annual claim limits, so you can find a suitable level of cover for your needs.

What does Autonet's excess protection insurance cover?

We offer three tiers of policy to suit different levels of excess payments and annual claim limits. Our three tiers of excess cover are listed in the table here:

Your Excess (up to) Your Annual Claim Limit Cost Per Year
Type 1£300£600£40.95
Type 2 £600£1,200£61.95
Type 3 £750£1,500£79.95

As you can see in the table, we offer annual claim limits double that of the maximum excess of the plan. That means you can claim more than once for excess reimbursement in a year up to the limit stated in your plan.

For example, if your excess was £500, and you purchased the tier 2 plan, you can claim as many times as you like up to the limit of £1,200 per year, so you'd be able to recover your excess in full twice and another £200 against a third claim, all in the space of a single year.

If you'd like to know more about our excess protection options, you can view the terms and conditions via our policy wording document.

Excess protection insurance FAQs

You can get excess protection from just £40.95 per year by calling us on 03303 438 511 today. Do you have a question about excess protection insurance? Feel free to ask us when you call, while our FAQs might have the answer for you.

Excess protection can reduce the cost of making a claim on your insurance. Of course, as with any form of cover, you will be charged an initial premium. But if you do have to make a claim then it will help you recover the compulsory and voluntary excess you have to pay - up to your claim limit.

There are some things that are not covered by your excess protection policy that are important to be aware of:

  • The cost of your claim if it's less than your excess.
  • Reimbursement of your excess if you've already recovered it through another policy.
  • Incidents that happened before you bought the policy.
  • Excess payments related to glass (windscreen, windows and sunroof), personal effects and equipment in the car.

Our excess protection plans start at just £40.95 for our tier 1 cover. Depending on your excess and the annual claim limit amount you'd like, you can also select our tier 2 and 3 plans which offer increased coverage.

You can. Each of our excess protection insurance plans comes with an annual claim limit that's double that of the max excess on the policy. You can claim as many times as you need to on your policy up to the limit stated.

So, if you have an excess of £400 and take on our tier 2 plan which comes with an annual claim limit of £1,200, you'll be able to recover your full excess on three separate claims - should you need to.
