Anti-truck theft campaign supported

A campaign to prevent and protect against truck theft, organised by online truckers' community TruckersWorld, has gathered momentum as the Freight Transport Association (FTA) added its support.

The FTA will assist in TruckersWorld's Truck Theft Text Alert (TTTA) as part of a bid to cut truck theft and bring those responsible to justice.

Under the TTTA scheme, details of stolen trucks or trailers are sent around via text message to members. If spotted, drivers will be able to notify police, who would recover the stolen property.

Jo Tanner, of the FTA, said the group was "delighted to support this scheme". She added the TTTA already enjoys widespread support among the truck driving community.

She revealed during the economic downturn, the number of truck theft incidents had increased with an associated rise in van insurance claims. Ms Tanner added a number of other crimes, such as siphoning diesel, hijacking, and violence towards drivers has also gone up.

Ms Tanner said: "TruckersWorld's Truck Theft Text Alert will hopefully not only help in the recovery of losses but also put thieves off altogether."
