Crime on the rise during recession

by Autonet Insurance | Oct 05, 2009

New research has found that crime is on the rise as a result of the recession, including vehicle theft.

Local authority staff reported an increase of instances in which homes and offices have been targeted by thieves.

And across the board crime is on the up, with antisocial behaviour, domestic violence, vehicle theft, and alcohol and drug abuse also increasing.

A survey by the Local Government association found that half of the respondents said they believe the number of burglaries had increased in the past 12 months.

Around 33% said they thought other types of crime, such as domestic violence and antisocial behaviour, had also risen.

About three-quarters of those questioned said the recession has had a significant impact on rising levels of burglary, vehicle crime and robbery.

Les Lawrence, chairman of the LGA's safer communities board, said: "Councils and the police are determined to maintain frontline services in the battle against crime and antisocial behaviour.

"The significant financial pressures local authorities are facing have so far not had a major impact on programmes such as street wardens or youth projects."
