Petrol prices have reached their highest level of 2009 so far, jumping to an average of 107.14p a litre, according to the AA.
This beats the previous high of 107.03p, which was recorded on September 9. Diesel also reached its highest price so far this year, averaging 108.4p a litre, said the motoring organisation.
Prices at the pumps had dipped earlier in October, averaging 104.97p a litre on October 11, with diesel at 105.96p. The current pricing levels mean the average petrol tank now costs £1.10 more to fill than it did two weeks ago.
AA Public Affairs head Paul Watters said: "With the rise in wholesale prices slowing and the price of oil falling back, the AA is hoping that this is yet another spike in the pump price that will drop back.
"However, it comes as drivers see the demands of winter motoring increase their vehicles' fuel consumption. This is bad news for families trying to make ends meet in recession."
