The Department for Transport (DfT) along with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has announced a new regulation for lorry and bus drivers.
The new rule, which aims to improve the skills and safety awareness of lorry and bus drivers, requires them to renew their licence more frequently.
It is believed that the measures will help Britain meet new European requirements on driver testing, training, examination and licensing, which will be effective from 2013.
Currently, UK law demands drivers of medium-sized and large buses and lorries who are over 45 to renew their licence every five years, as well as undergoing medical tests to prove they are fit to drive.
From 2013, bus and lorry drivers below 45 are expected to confirm their medical fitness and renew their licence every five years.
The DfT also made it clear that the new regulation will not affect other drivers. They will still have to renew their driving licences every decade, as they do at present.
