Motorcycle manufacturer Kawasaki has unveiled the new Ninja ZX-10R super-sport race bike at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

The Japanese firm finally released the latest addition to its Ninja range, which is known for its high bike insurance premium, ahead of the Superbike World Championship, after it leaked teaser pictures over the past three months of the motorcycle with test rider Akira Yanagawa.

Kawasaki hopes the new bike can restore the firm's status in top-level production racing.

Steve Guttridge, race manager at Kawasaki Europe, said: "The new race bike has been eagerly anticipated by everyone involved in the Superbike racing project.

"The Paul Bird Motorsport team have evolved and restructured continuously in order to be in a position to utilise the new bike's potential to the maximum next season."

Ichiro Yoda, project director of Kawasaki Japan, confirmed that racing was at the heart of the new machine's DNA.

The full production model of the Ninja ZX-10R is set to be unveiled at the Cologne international motorcycle show in early October.
