Deciding on organ donation will now be added to the list of mandatory things new or would-be drivers have to tick off, along with car tax, car insurance and a driving licence.
The DVLA has made it compulsory for people to answer a question on organ donation when applying for a licence online.
The new initiative offers applicants a prompted choice system under which they can either register for donation, or inform they have already done so, or state that they do not wish to answer the question.
Until now, DVLA's online application process allowed drivers to skip the question entirely.
The new measure has been introduced in the hope that more people will be encouraged to donate life-saving organs in the event of their death.
Studies show less than three in 10 people in Britain have currently registered themselves as donors although many more people are keen to do so.
Driving licence applicants who opt to become donors will be able to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.
