Motorists have been urged to take extra care whilst driving as the big freeze is set to continue for the rest of the week.
In parts of the UK the weekend weather provided sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall causing people to abandon their cars and stay indoors due to the hazardous conditions on the roads. The snow caused major travel disruptions with the number of breakdowns increasing for cars. Air travel also came to a standstill after Heathrow Airport cancelled most of its flights.
Drivers are being reminded that roads can be a lower temperature than air temperatures increasing the risk of ice and potential accidents.
More snow has been predicted for southern Scotland and Northern England today as well as the chance of rain which could freeze overnight.
Victoria Kettley, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather arm of the Press Association spoke about the recent weather and what to expect, she said: "Scotland and Northern Ireland will see a front move in during today which could bring some snow in western Scotland - possibly a couple of centimetres on higher ground.
“It will push south east overnight and edge into Northumberland and Cumbria by tomorrow morning, there could be rain, sleet and snow on high ground as the leading edge of the front pushes through, as well as the risk of freezing rain.”
Extra snow could also be a possibility for the Midlands on Friday, she added:“Some weather models are showing significant snow for the Midlands of up to 6cm on Friday, but it is uncertain if the precipitation the front is bringing will fall as rain, sleet, or snow."
Most of the UK has been given a yellow weather warning for Thursday and Friday as ice will stay for the next few days. Drivers can ensure they are covered for the weather by making sure they have adequate breakdown cover if they are caught out by the ever changing weather.
