Most drivers are confused by parking policies and many think their fines are unfair, a survey has revealed.
Motorists are puzzled about where to park, how to park and how much to pay, the poll from esure car insurance found.
As many as 25% have received parking fines in the last year, with 69% of them considering themselves unfairly penalised.
The survey of 1,003 drivers showed that 93% found parking regulations confusing, 74% failed to recognise all the rules of the Highway Code for parking and 29% said their local parking polices changed on a regular basis.
More than half (53%) said they had encountered contradictory parking signs in the same area, while 73% complained of a lack of parking signs.
Fewer than half (48%) had contested a fine when they believed they had been unfairly treated, as many of them thought they had no chance of winning their case.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insurance, said: "As more and more local councils take on Decriminalised Parking Enforcement, it is important to check with your local authority for any signs specific to your area that you don't understand."
