An ageing 2CV car that has been transformed into a cubist work of art has sold for £8,000 at RM Auctions in Battersea.
The `car-tist` take on Picasso`s Portrait of Dora Maar was one of 11 creations by mechanic Andy Saunders that fetched almost £250,000
The 45-year-old from Poole also transformed a 1998 Suzuki Wagon R into a "credit crunch Hummer", dubbed the Alchemist because it is "a complete transformation". It fetched £5,500.
He also started customising a £900 1992 Mini during the auction to raise money for Dorset Cancer Care and Poole Hospital's Cardiac Unit. The winning bidder paid £4,000.
He said: "Most of the cars have gone to a museum in America. I haven't come down yet. I'm absolutely befuddled, I can't think straight."
At the other end of the scale, a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder driven by Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in the film Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle failed to sell.
Others with celebrity connections included a 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible State Limousine used in the royal wedding of Prince Albert II and the Princess Paolo. It sold for £19,800.
