Top number plate sells for £352,411

A record-smashing £352,411 (£285,000 plus fees and VAT) has been paid for the `1 D` personalised number plate - and all in the name of love.

It was bought by Lebanese property developer Nabil Bishara for his wife`s Bentley, and easily surpassed the previous £254,000 paid for `51 NGH` in 2006.

Says Damian Lawson, DVLA Personalised Registrations' Marketing Manager: "We always expected interest in this registration to be among the highest we've ever had, and the pre-auction bids certainly backed that up.

"But we were still amazed when the bidding went as high as it did and we are absolutely over the moon with the final result."

The registration, the star lot at auction at Ardencote Manor Hotel in Warwick has always been regarded as one of the most desirable and highly valued.

Other must-have registrations still to go under the hammer include `2 0`, which is also expected to attract some high-flying bidders.
