South West crippled by heavy snow

by  |

Heavy snowfall has caused chaos for motorists across the South West with residents in Gloucestershire particularly badly affected.

Some areas in the region reported up to 6in (15cm) of snow resulting in a spate of accidents as commuters struggled to make their regular trips to work.

Gritters are concentrating on freeing up major routes across the region, while snow ploughs have been working throughout the night to keep traffic moving on many of the regions main thoroughfares.

Many B-roads and minor routes were rendered impassable by the conditions, while lanes were also closed on the M4 and M5.

First Bus announced a cancellation of services in Bristol, Bath and Somerset while travellers looking to catch some winter sun were left grounded after Bristol and Exeter Airports both closed their runways in the early hours to allow snow to be cleared.

Rush hour commuters in Gloucestershire did not fare any better on Tuesday evening, with many forced to abandon their cars as the blizzard conditions moved in.
