DIY tasks 'could help homeowners'

by  |

By performing simple DIY tasks to improve security, homeowners can enjoy discounts on their home insurance policies, an industry body has said.

According to the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA), homes with industry-approved locks, burglar alarms and CCTV cameras may be favoured by home insurance companies.

Small DIY tasks can thus enable homeowners to get cheaper insurance premiums. BIBA added such home security measures could help to keep the burglars away.

Graeme Trudgill, BIBA's technical and corporate affairs executive, said: "If a burglar is walking down the road and there are a couple of houses that he is interested in, if one has got an alarm flashing away and other one hasn't, then he may well take the easy option."

However, Mr Trudgill suggested that homeowners should consult with their insurers before making the improvements.

He added: "They will advise you on which ones will give you a discount and which ones are the best ones."
