Audi A1 has been awarded the top crash safety score of five stars by the European New Car Assessment Programme.
The new supermini received some of the best ratings in the model's segment for adult occupant protection in frontal, rear or side impact collisions.
The car safety performance assessment programme also gave high scores to the compact model for child safety and pedestrian protection - a development that will have been noted by car insurance companies.
According to the German auto manufacturer, the A1's special front end is designed to mitigate damage to pedestrians and cyclists in the event of an accident, and the electronic stability programme (ESP) also helps road handling.
Prices for the Audi A1, available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, start at £13,420.
