The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is urging motorists to fit winter tyres to their vehicles to cope with the ongoing severe weather conditions.
Describing the advantages of using winter tyres, the motoring charity said such tyres provide better grip on snow and ice compared with standard versions.
Winter tyres include a different kind of rubber, while they also come with a specifically developed tread pattern, with wider grooves and narrow slits.
Motorists may benefit from the special material used for the tread section on winter tyres, as it could help to retain grip on the road well below freezing temperatures.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "There are four options available in the UK: winter tyres, all-season tyres, snow chains and snow socks.
"None of these are considered alterations to a car so shouldn't affect your car insurance premium, although it is a good idea to make your insurance provider aware."
Meanwhile, the IAM added that the primary drawbacks of winter tyres are storage and cost.
The advice for motorists who want to avoid the inconvenience of storing extra wheels and tyres is to consider fitting all-season tyres.
