North Ayrshire Council has bought seven eco-friendly vans, highlighting its commitment to the environment.
The council will have had to take out van insurance cover for what is the biggest fleet of hybrid vans in Scotland. The new hybrid Transit vans are provided by Ashwoods Automotive.
Equipped with an innovative hybrid drive system, the standard Ford Transits will be used by the local authority's building services in place of existing diesel-powered vehicles.
The environmentally friendly vehicles will help cut fuel consumption by up to 20%, saving about £700 a year per vehicle. The council is also hoping to reduce its carbon footprint with the help of the new hybrid vans.
Councillor Tom Barr, portfolio holder for the environment, said: "The purchase of this fleet of hybrid vans once again shows the council's commitment to energy efficiency.
"It is important to remember that the benefits of energy efficiency are twofold. Not only do we ensure that we are doing our best to save the environment from the effects of carbon emissions - we are saving money while doing so."
