Drivers react to spiralling costs

by  |

Research has revealed that 30% of people have ditched their car over the past 12 months as the cost of motoring soars.

Sixt car rental said that the increasing cost of car insurance and filling up at the pumps are the main reasons forcing many drivers off the road.

Car ownership fell the sharpest during the period in Aberdeen, London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow - with an collective drop of 48%.

The research claimed the annual cost of running a car - which includes tax, insurance, fuel, parking permits/congestion charges and general maintenance - comes to £1,789.

But 86% of those polled after getting rid of their car said they did not miss it, with this sentiment strongest in Bristol, Belfast and London.
