A new technology that involves artificial Intelligence (AI) and the latest computer games could help spot and fix leaky water pipes, experts have said.
Researchers at Exeter University have evolved the method that enables computer software that can search for leaks and raise the alarm.
The technology could help tackle floods that cause damage to properties and businesses and thereby reduce home insurance claims.
"We are using the latest AI and computer gaming technologies to help them find ways of identifying leaks and other problems faster than ever before," Professor Zoran Kapelan of the University of Exeter's Centre for Water Systems.
Worn out Victorian pipes and harsh winters often cause leaks that cost water utilities millions of pounds. Such costs are often passed onto homeowners through increased rates at a time when many households are under financial pressure.
