Many drivers in the UK lack knowledge about tyre safety, a new poll has found.
According to the survey carried out by Unipart Car Care Centres, more than 60% of motorists are unsure of how deep their tyre treads should be to keep them safe.
Although experts recommend a tyre tread of at least 3mm for safe winter driving, the legal minimum is 1.6mm.
The research, which involved 2,000 people, found that over half (53.75%) of the respondents have no idea what the correct tyre pressure should be for their vehicles.
Unipart Car Care Centres advises motorists to be prepared for difficult driving conditions that could be caused by snow, fog and ice in the upcoming winter.
Although the weather has been mild in recent weeks, winter weather could get severe and make road conditions treacherous which can lead to crashes and claims on car insurance policies.
The survey also revealed that only just over 12% check their car every few weeks.
Unipart Car Care Centre Panel chairman Tim Ferris said: "By just taking ten minutes every week to carry out simple checks, drivers can be more confident that their car is roadworthy and safe."
