The countdown has begun for the 2012 Olympics that is now only hours away from being officially opened.
The London 2012 delegation travelled to Singapore in 2005 to bid for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. A well thought out presentation was made by Royals, sporting athletes and the Olympic minister. Great Britain was announced as the winners of the bid.
Years of preparation for the Olympics has been carried out by official sponsors, the Government, athletes, sports personalities and Olympic organisers. Today will be the day when the UK will open the Olympic Games by hosting the official opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony for the Games will mark the momentous occasion for Great Britain with £27m spent on state of the art performances, equipment and that all important person who will be lighting the Olympic Flame. Who will be carrying out this duty has been kept a secret until tonight with many speculating it could be footballer David Beckham or Olympic champion Steven Redgrave.
The Olympic Flame has spent months going up and down the country leaving no area unvisited. Today the Flame will make its way down the River Thames on the Royal rowbarge to make its final journey to the Olympic Stadium. Starting from Hampton Court Palace Olympic rowing gold medallist Matthew Pinsent will board the rowbarge. The flame will then be carried to City Hall until the opening ceremony.
Millions of spectators are expected to visit the capital over the next two weeks to see some of the greatest athletes compete for a gold medal.
The question everyone is asking is who will actually light the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony tonight and who will win gold and the 2012 Olympics? Guess we will have to wait and see!
