Yesterday the annual Halfords Tour Series final was held in Stoke-on-Trent. It was the first time the cycling grand final had been held at the Potteries. We decided to go down and have a look to see what was happening; it turned out to be an interesting day!
The Halfords Tour Series is a cycling event which is spread over weeks of races up and down the UK. It gives biking enthusiasts the chance to watch live cycle races with some of the world’s leading cyclists taking part. Ten teams battle it out to become the champion team at the end of the tour.
As it stood Endura Racing Team were at the top of the leader board with 94 points closely followed by Team Raleigh GAC and Team UK Youth both who were in second position with 76 points. The grand final would decide who the overall champions of the Halfords Tour Series would be.
The afternoon kicked off with the Thomas Godwin Team Trial race. Every team competed who were involved in the tour; the race was to complete two laps of the course in the quickest time, whoever did the race the quickest were declared the winners. After a 30 minute delay Team Hope Factory were the first team to race and managed to complete the race in a time of 3.27.08, setting the pace for the rest of the teams. Herbalife Leisure Lakes, Metaltek Scott, Team IG Sigma Sport, Cycle Premier Kovert, Node 4 Giordana Racing, Team Raleigh GAC, Team UK Youth, Rapha Condor Sharp and Endura Racing all followed similar times. Two hours later after all teams had competed Rapha Condor Sharp were declared the winners with an impressive finish time of 3.09.28.
Fast forward to 7.30pm the rain began to fall with a slight wind which was starting to be a problem for the riders. There was a slight delay in the starting of the race but after 15 minutes all riders were ready to take on the challenge. The race all depended on what position the teams came individually at the end of the race to determine the overall champions. Just under an hour later and over 25 laps of the circuit complete, all riders were through the finishing line and Endura Racing team were declared the winners of the Halfords Tour Series with 110 points.
Trophies were presented to the winners of the series by the Lady Mayoress and local company directors, followed by the traditional champagne spray celebration by the winners!
